How often should you wash your pillow?
It ensures a restful sleep: the pillow. We are using it every night, that's why it should be washed regularly, if only for hygienic reasons. But how often should you wash your pillow?
First of all, the good news: you can easily wash most pillows in the washing machine. It doesn't matter down, feather, or microfiber filling: As long as you follow the care instructions, you can wash your pillow without problems. Actually is very easy to keep down pillows nice and fluffy. I will share with you the most important questions and answers about washing pillows.
How often should you clean your pillows?
That also depends on the degree of stress. At the latest when stains are noticed when making the bed or the pillow no longer smells perfect, it is time. It will be enough to wash pillows once or twice a year.
What should you watch out for when washing?
Before washing, you should always read carefully the care symbols on the washing label of the pillow as a guide. An important rule: do not clean the pillow with very hot water and do not spin it too hard.
It is very important that the pillow finds enough space in the laundry drum. This is the only way to wash it properly and cleanly. You should therefore always clean pillows individually in the machine and not add any more laundry.
For feather and down pillows washing, select the wool washing program and choose a temperature of 40 to 60 degrees. You can wash pure polyester pillows with your hand at a maximum of 30 or 40 degrees or send them for professional cleaning. You should choose the washing temperature indicated on the care label.
Washing microfiber pillows: what should be considered?
In addition to pillows made from natural products such as feathers and down, there are pillows made from man-made fibres. Both the pillowcase and the filling then contain so-called synthetic fibres or microfibers. Microfiber pillows (also: microfiber pillows) have the advantage that they are extremely breathable, heat-storing and suitable for allergy sufferers.
It is easy to vare for Microfiber pillows in comparison to down or feather pillows. Like natural fibres, they are machine washable. Clean the pillow with a special synthetic detergent at 60 degrees unless of course there is something else on the care label. You can wash some pillows even at 90 degrees. And almost all kinds of pillows are suitable for tumble drying.
How does the pillow get nice and fluffy?
So that feathers and down do not clump together, you should put a tennis ball in the drum - both during the wash and afterwards in the dryer. The ball loosens the pillow during the washing and drying processes. You should take a clean and colourfast ball.
Which detergent is the right one?
Use a mild detergent for wool or delicate fabrics. Often it is stated on the packaging whether the detergent is suitable for down. There are also special down detergents. You don't need a lot of detergents to clean the pillow - about a third of the amount you would otherwise use for one load is more than enough.
How do you dry the pillow?
It is best to put the pillow in the tumble dryer after washing. Some devices have their own drying program, especially for down pillows. Or, you should dry both down and feather pillows slowly and at a low temperature.
In between, you can interrupt the process from time to time, and you can take the pillow out of the drum and shake it up vigorously. So you can distribute the filling and the pillow becomes soft and fluffy again.
What about non-washable pillows?
Of course, there are also pillows that cannot be machine washed, for example, ergonomic sleeping pillows that are specially shaped. What alternatives are there here? You should better wipe the surface of the pillow with a slightly damp cotton cloth and a little washing-up liquid. Dried stains can be carefully removed with a textile brush. Silk pillows should generally only be cleaned by hand and the water should be clear.
It is better to regularly air non-washable pillows on the balcony or by the window. This counteracts unpleasant smells. Make sure, however, that there is no rain or snow. Some non-washable pillows, don't tolerate the sun. For example, silk.
