Tulum is a city on the Caribbean coast of Mexico with 20000 inhabitants. It is located on the Yucatán Peninsula on the Riviera Maya in the state of Quintana Roo.
Cancún, the center of the Riviera Maya holiday region, is 130 kilometers away. The tourist offer in Tulum is not yet as well developed as in the neighboring towns on the Riviera Maya. Therefore, a more relaxed and quiet holiday is possible here.
Tulum is right on the Caribbean coast. White sandy beaches and the turquoise sea dominate the image of the city. The picturesque location offers first-class, Caribbean flair and thus perfect conditions for a beach holiday in the Caribbean.
Climate in Tulum
The climate in Tulum is tropical and hot. The temperatures are between 23 °C and 30 °C. Vacationers expect year-round summer temperatures that fluctuate little. April to September is the warmest and sunniest time in the region. In May, the sun shines an average of eleven hours a day. Daytime temperatures can even rise to 35°C from May to September.
In Tulum, it rains an average of 108 days a year. Rain is most likely in the period from June to October. Strong thunderstorms and hurricanes must also be expected here. The hurricane season in this region lasts until the end of November. After that, the temperatures moderate again and the humidity drops significantly.
The water temperatures are warm all year round and invite you to a bathing holiday. The Caribbean Sea is never colder than 21°C.
When is the best time to visit Tulum?
In the dry season from November to April, temperatures in Tulum are pleasantly summery. The great heat and the rainy season are over so the humidity drops again. In the evening the temperatures cool down. Tulum nights are pleasant and lend themselves to long evenings on the beach or at the beach bar. This period is therefore the best travel time.
Especially during the public holidays in December and at Easter, many tourists are drawn here. During this period, hotel prices are also higher than the annual average. But summery temperatures and lots of sunshine are guaranteed. Even during the hurricane season, you can spend your vacation in Tulum carefree. Emergency plans and an early warning system provide security.
In general, we recommend mid-November to mid-May as the absolute best time to travel to Tulum and the Riviera Maya.
Sightseing & Attractions
The Tulum Ruins are the city's most popular tourist attraction. Here you can still visit the remains of the former Mayan city. The largest and tallest building of the ancient Mayan complex is the Castillo, which stands directly on a hill overlooking the sea and overlooks the blue ocean. The historic city center of the Maya city is limited by a city wall with watchtowers. The city wall is open to the sea and offers a unique view of the Caribbean Sea.
You can get to know the Maya culture in an impressive way here. Tulum's coastline is perfect for scuba diving and snorkeling and offers countless water sports opportunities. Shops for shopping, restaurants, and many beach bars complement the tourist offer. The national park of the same name is also located near the city.
This has a coastline with many mangrove forests and cenotes. Cenotes are collapsed limestone caves that are now filled with fresh water. A beautiful area for swimming, diving, and boating.
