5 Tips for Keeping Your Kids Happy On Long Car Trips

Kids love to travel, but sometimes it's hard to keep them entertained on a long car ride. Here are some ideas for keeping your children busy and having fun in the back seat.

Keep the radio off

Your kids probably get bored with the radio from time to time. That's why you should always get an mp3 player for your kids with their favorite tunes on it. That way, they can listen to all the music that they actually like, so they never get bored and complain. Plus, they might also fall asleep while the music plays so then you have a little more quiet time in the car.

Set up an Entertainment Center.

You can make your car more fun and entertaining for your children by setting up an entertainment center. This will allow your kids to watch movies, play games, read books, listen to music, and even draw pictures. This is probably a 100% guarantee that your kids won't get bored. Because, come on, if they have music, games, etc., how could any child get bored by that? Be aware, though, that this is a rather expensive way to keep your kids entertained. So if you don't want to spend a lot of money on that, this is probably not what you should be choosing.

Play Games with Them.

If you want to keep your kids entertained during long trips, try playing games with them. There are many games that don't require you to look away from the road. Simple games that anyone can play, including children, are always perfect during long rides. Remember, don't just use one method, but instead combine them. Like, you can play games with them, but eventually, they get bored again so you have to always have something ready that keeps entertaining them. If you drive with your husband/wife sitting next to you, they can also play games with the kids. Since they don't need to watch the road, they can also play online board games, or just generally games that they can play altogether over their smartphones. If they don't have smartphones yet, try getting your wife/husband in the backseat with the children so they can do other activities together, including playing physical games like Uno or something else.

Read Books Together.

Reading books together is an excellent activity for families who travel by car. It helps children learn new words and develop language skills. Plus, reading aloud to each other makes everyone feel more connected. Again, this is probably more useful if you actually have a second adult in the car. May that be your significant other or maybe the older child in the family, if there are any. Remember, kids get bored of books with no pictures in them, so try to find colorful picture books that are fun for children to read. There are many out there, so don't worry about finding any. Oftentimes, when a kid likes a certain book, it'll want to read it over and over again. So that's always a bonus because then, you don't have to bring too many books with you, but rather, you can repeat one single book and then, if there's another favorite, you can repeat that one, also.

Sing Songs Together.

If you’re traveling with young children, try singing songs together. This will help them stay entertained and engaged. Sing songs that they like, may they be nursery rhymes, or songs from other artists that they really like. You don't have to have a perfect singing voice, but try to get some melody in to entertain them a little more. Remember, those are your own children, so no need to be ashamed of anything. It's all about having fun, in the end.
