How to Back Up Your Blogger Blog Using Google Takeout

Recent issues affecting some Blogger users have highlighted the importance of keeping regular backups of your blog. Although Blogger is generally a reliable platform, unexpected problems can happen, making it essential to have a copy of your content.

One of the easiest ways to back up your Blogger data is by using Google Takeout, Google's official data export service.

What Is Google Takeout?

Google Takeout allows you to download data from your Google account, including Blogger, Gmail, Google Photos, Google Drive, Calendar, and many other Google services.

How to Download Your Blogger Backup with Google Takeout

Step 1: Open Google Takeout

Sign in to your Google account and open the Google Takeout page.

Step 2: Select Blogger

By default, most Google services are selected.

  • Click Deselect all.
  • Scroll down and locate Blogger.
  • Check the box next to Blogger.

Step 3: Continue

Click Next step at the bottom of the page.

Step 4: Choose Your Export Settings

You can customize:

  • File type (ZIP is the most common option)
  • Maximum file size
  • Delivery method

The default settings are suitable for most users.

Step 5: Create the Export

Click Create export.

Google will prepare your archive and send you an email when it's ready for download. Depending on the amount of data, this may take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours.

Why Regular Backups Matter

Whether it's an unexpected technical issue, an account problem, or accidental deletion, having a recent backup can save years of work.

After the recent Blogger suspension incident that affected many users, I've made it a habit to keep  a Google Takeout backup every month. It's a simple step that can provide valuable peace of mind and help protect your content for the future.
