Sun Protection From The Inside - Is That Possible?

sun bathing

Food supplements that supposedly protect the skin "from the inside in a biological way" from the sun are being advertised again and again. But is it really possible to avoid the annoying creaming by taking tablets, capsules, powders and the like?

One ingredient that is found in almost all relevant products is beta-carotene. This vitamin A precursor is said to accelerate tanning and protect the skin from the sun's rays. Most of the studies could not confirm this sun-protective effect, only one study was able to show a slightly positive effect. In this study, the subjects were given 20 mg beta-carotene daily for ten weeks. Beta carotene is therefore by no means sufficient as the sole sun protection but is at best suitable as a supplement.

Faster tanning with carotenoids?

Like all carotenoids, beta-carotene accumulates in the skin layers and causes an orange-brown colour. This skin colour should not be confused with a pre-tan due to UV radiation. Unlike the tan caused by melanin, the colouring of the skin caused by the dyes has no protective function.

By the way
"The benefits of beta-carotene for the treatment of erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP), a painful photodermatosis that is also incorrectly referred to as" light allergy ", is well documented."

When dispensing beta-carotene-containing food supplements, customers always have to be asked about their smoking behaviour. An overdose can promote the development of lung cancer in smokers. Since many foods (e.g. breakfast cereals and sweets) are fortified with beta-carotene, this overdose can easily be achieved. Agents with beta-carotene are therefore not suitable for smokers.

 KNOWLEDGE ABOUT VITAMIN E

Antioxidant protective factors

Beta-carotene, like lycopene and vitamins C and E, has an antioxidant effect. You can prevent skin damage by preventing the formation of radicals caused by UV radiation. Trace elements such as selenium and zinc support the metabolism and can also help to regenerate sun-damaged skin. Calcium also plays an important role in the defence function of the skin. Antioxidants are therefore not suitable as sole protection against UV radiation but can help prepare the skin well for the repair of any skin damage that may occur.
